The Cost of Discipleship in Christianity

Becoming a disciple of Jesus Christ entails requirements such as being part of the Christian family by helping to preach the gospel around the world, helping the needy, following all the teachings taught by Jesus as well as the Commandments given by God. Jesus during His mission on earth commanded His followers to go and make disciples from all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Any teaching on Christian discipleship cannot end without the mention of Jesus Christ just like Wood Science and Todd Shupe.

Jesus Christ taught His disciples and the entire world that the journey to Christianity is difficult and calls for sacrifice. Getting saved costs individuals no fee at all but then becoming a disciple of Christ calls for sacrifice and commitment. Discipleship means giving up all we have for the sake of Jesus. Christs used three elements to present His teachings on the cost of discipleship.

Discipleship means owning nothing else apart from Jesus Christ. By hating everything, Christ meant that we should not allow human beings come between us and God. Human beings should never be allowed to dictate the kind of relationship we have with our Creator. In this situation is where we now give up on Family and ourselves to have Jesus Christ fully in our lives. We should only obey parents when what they demand is right according to the failure of the Christian doctrine to which it calls for giving up on them and following Christ. Wives should also never allow their husbands mislead them in the name of submission.

Christ also listed giving up on earthly desires as the price an individual pays for following Him. He encouraged the disciples to have the urge to be part of Him. Jesus went through much suffering to bring salvation to mankind. Human beings can only become disciples of Christ by undergoing similar conditions. Jesus’ disciples should avoid actions that result in breaking of the commandments.

The followers of Jesus should always strive for spiritual wealth. Jesus taught that one could never balance between serving God and taking care of material possessions. Becoming a Christian disciple means one has been brought on a price and they are not their own as they are now a slave of Christ who then owns everything. The disciples of Christ should never allow their riches on earth come between their relationship with God.

Jesus used two young men to explain how family and riches can dictate the relationship with God. One of them was a very rich man but when Christ told him to give out all his wealth and follow him, he failed. The one who had lost his father decided to bury his father first before claiming his heavenly position.
